Talk about guests! This year we have over 100 guests coming in for our celebration of the Netherlands. That's not including the area performers and venders that come in every year to make Middfest the premiere event that it is! Here are some of the guests and performers that you can expect to see from October 5-7, 2007. Enjoy and have a Happy Middfest!

The Diary of Anne Frank
Middfest International's history project will focus, in part, on WWII and the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The play, The Diary of Anne Frank, is being produced to bring to life this horrific time for the Dutch and particularly the Jewish population. Three of the 90 minute performances will be at Middfest in the Exhibit Center building. All performances will have question and answer sessions. In addition, the full play will travel to other locations throughout the Miami Valley.

We are extremely fortunate to have as play director Christine Brunner, a professional actor, director, member of the Theatre Department at Miami University, Oxford, winner of "Best Professional Director" 2005 Daytona Award and many other awards.

Dutch History Live is a group of 24 street sweepers, dancers, and performers hailing from Holland, Michigan. They will perform the Dutch ritual of sweeping the streets in traditional Dutch garb. This ritual is in keeping with the "Dutch cleanliness" tradition of making sure that the streets are properly cleaned before any special occasion and it is something that you will not want to miss! Don't just stand there and gawk, though, grab a bucket as everyone is invited to join in the fun each day at the beginning of the festivities. You won't want to miss our amazing finale on Sunday night. The Dutch History Live group has developed an incredible show that takes the audience through the twelve provinces of the Netherlands, sharing a bit of each through dress, song, dance, and customs. This show is certain to end our incredible Netherlands' celebration on a high note and leave a smile on your face that will be long remembered!

During the opening ceremonies keep your ears peeled for the distinctive sound of the Town Crier who will open up the ceremonies with his traditional rendering.

Master accordion player, Ron Tomocik, will rock the Broad Street Stage with both world and traditional music from the Netherlands. Ron is a gold medal winner of the 2005, 2006, and 2007 Arts Competition sponsored by the Department of Veterans' Affairs and has played at the prestigious Tulip Time festival in Holland, Michigan since 2003 as well as playing in both France and Germany. UFO DeRoadneuzen/Rednoses Band will be joining us for their U.S. tour. Hailing from the city of Utrecht, in the center of the Netherlands, this fourteen member band was formed in 1979, and are sure to delight you with their traditional European Carnival Music. You won't be able to keep your feet still as their infectious music puts a smile on your face!

This weekend marks the eleventh year that Rogerio Berbeki Figueiredo will attend the festivities. His ensemble, Barvinok Ukranian Folk Dance and CTB Santa Monica, is bringing 31 performers this year. Although they are based in Brazil, their beautiful dances and colorful costumes reflect their Ukrainian heritage. Make sure you catch one of their six exciting performances highlighting their Ukrainian and Brazilian culture!

Dutch Clog Dancers will be doing Klompen dancing, a Dutch folk dance. The authentic costumes and footwear highlight the various traditional dresses of the twelve different regions of the Netherlands. See if you can guess what region they are from as you watch their exuberant dances throughout the weekend!

Shafaatullah Khan, the youngest son of the legendary Imrat Khan. In the history of Indian classical music, Shafaatullah Kahn is a shining star, debuting at the Kings Lynn Festival in England at the age of eleven before the Queen Mother. He is the first known artist to have performed a single recital on the Sitar, Surbahar, and Tabla and in a field where an artist either excels in strings or percussion his creativity has challenged the musical paradigm. As a descendent of one of the greatly respected and renowned families of musicians of India, Shafaatullah Khan represents the eighth generation in a lineage that can be traced back to the great Mughal Emperor Akbar in 16th Century India. Shafaatullah has performed worldwide at venues such as the Acropolis, Athens; Royal Albert Hall, London; The Kremlin, Moscow; as well as Lincoln Center and the Smithsonian. His television credits include a program shared with Ray Charles, several BBC programs, and other worldwide telecasts. Most recently Deepak Chopra produced his last three CD's and his music was featured on the omnimax film "Stomp".

The Silver Arm is in its second decade of performing traditional Celtic music. The band's high energy instrumentals, subtle harmonies, and dynamic rhythms provide a unique blend of contemporary and traditional Celtic styles that will alternately sooth and invigorate your soul.

Break out your reggae moves as the Ark Band takes the stage. This five member band from Columbus will be sure to bring back memories of the islands with their own mix of Reggae, Calypso, and Soca.

We have a special treat in store for you as Haale and her two member band take the stage for the first time here at Middfest! Playing such diverse venues as Marseilles, France and the three day music festival Bonnaroo, Haale is a rising star hailing from New York City who sings in both Persian and English and counts Sean Lennon and David Byrne as her fans. While Haale quotes mystical poets such as Rumi or slashes guitar riffs with the intensity of an arena rocker, her electric band kicks out hypnotic grooves taking cues from her Iranian homeland and psychedelic rockers like Jimi Hendrix. You won't want to miss this gem of a performer or her powerfully haunting voice as she plays her self described "psychedelic sufi trance rock".

Runa Pacha will flood the plaza with their exuberant, soulful sound from the Equator. This four member group of Ecuadorians carries on the rich cultural traditions that they have inherited from their Incan ancestors in their native village of Otvalo, Equador in their music. Lying on the famous Inca trail, Otvalo, is a small community of hard working people, artisans, farmers, and folk musicians. The group makes all of their own wind instruments out of native materials.

You won't want to miss our immensely talented storyteller, Debbie Heiser. Hailing from Holland, MI, she is sure to spellbind her young audience. Debbie is sponsored by the Middletown Library.

The SMAG Dance Collective will also be on hand with a specially designed program featuring the always ubiquitous Dr.Seuss's Cat in the Hat and follows his wacky adventures in the Netherlands.

The 17th Century Dutch "absolute philosopher" and great ethicist, Baruch Spinoza, will also be on hand to debate with you any philosophical points. Spinoza is best known for laying the ethical groundwork that paved the way for 18th century rationalism and modern day biblical criticism.

We are happy to present our miller-in residence, Alisa Crawford. Alisa holds the distinction of being the only miller certified outside of the Netherlands to do traditional Dutch milling and has turned her passion for traditional milling into an art form. She will also be selling her own brand of organic flour. You can catch Alisa on the Mound all weekend.

Darlele Wallinga, a Hindeloopen painter, will be on hand throughout the weekend. Hindeloopen Painting can trace its origins to around 1650 BCE and, as such, is one of the older folk painting traditions. Catch Darlele at:

Washington Irving's famous character the Headless Horseman comes to life. Catch him if you dare in the Literature Center all weekend!

Rob't Hart, the noted architectural photographer from Rotterdam, is traveling to Middfest especially for the event. Rob't's philosophy on photography is that "Whatever the subject of the photo may be, the drive to take it is always the same: capturing beauty". Taking this philosophy to heart Rob't's architectural photographs capture time and the essence of the modern architecture of the Netherlands and their changing society.

Harry Nelis Jr, a noted cheese expert, will be lecturing at various times throughout the weekend, on the history of cheese in the Netherlands and traditional cheese making practices as well as on tulips. You can catch him at the Brown Café and the Mound all weekend.

You may remember the team of oxen from last year's China Celebration where they made their triumphant walk across the plaza. Due to the popularity of these two runderen (oxen), we are hosting a Paradeplaats (Animal Parade Ground) all weekend. Situated on the street in front of the Manchester Hotel, this incredible duo and their horsey friends will be strutting their stuff all weekend.

Sinterklaass and his helper, the moor, Zwarte Peiter, will be at the Youth Park. In honor of Middfest's celebration of the Netherlands, we convinced this jolly duo to travel over the waters of the Atlantic earlier than usual. If you are fortunate, you will catch a glimpse of Holland's favorite saint in his majestic red and white bishop's outfit as he checks out the good boys and girls and gives them a sweet for their good behavior. Be careful, though, you won't want to get the lump of coal that Zwarte Peiter will be carrying!

Ms. Cogville and her staff at Tante Nellie's Kitchen is our featured Netherlands food vendor this year. She will be offering asavory Snert (Split Pea) Soup as well as specialty breads, delicious pastries, and scrumptious cookies. Make sure you try this delicious food at the Food Court.

Dirk W. Schiff, Counsul General for the Netherlands based in Chicago, and Lieutenant Colonel Marco Van Praat of the Dutch Air Force will be addressing area business and community leaders at the Business Breakfast. Lt.Colonel Van Praat is the keynote speaker and he will be talking about the experience of bringing in over 100 pilots and personnel for training in Springfield, OH at the air force base as well as the implications that this arrangement offers for area businesses in the next four years. In addition to all of these performers, various regional groups from throughout Ohio will round out our performing arts as they come to Middfest and share their diverse ethnic backgrounds. Our longtime friends Phyllis Deweese Academy of Dance, Jim McCutcheon, Razor's Edge, Middletown Lyric Theatre, Fiesta Dance, Royal Scotish Dancers, Tom Bennes, Phillipine Folk Arts Society, and Anaya Gypsy will also join us throughout the weekend.

The traditional Middfest bike tour will swing by several locations in Franklin and Carlisle important to the early Dutch settlers who came to this area from The Netherlands by way of New Jersey.

Super Saturday for Kids Registration: 9:00 A.M.
Join the scouts, church, school and individual kids who visit Middfest for a special up-close and personal visit with the international visitors, performers, story tellers and craftspeople. They will join in with the Klompen Dancers, watch the carving of a wooden shoe and learn why farm families in the Netherlands prefer the wooden shoe.
